Gambling includes betting on sports events, buying lottery tickets, scratchies, putting money into poker machines and more.
You can gamble from your phone, laptop, in the newsagency, the pub, club. Almost anywhere.
You hear a lot in the news about the pokies these days. But how do they actually work?
The pokies, also known as electronic gaming machines, or EGMs, are controlled by computers. A computer ‘randomly’ selects the symbols that will appear when the ‘reels’ stop spinning. It’s impossible to predict or influence the results of the spin, but it is possible to predict that over time the player will lose, due to the house edge designed into the computer program.

Of all the types of gambling available in Tasmania, more people gamble with lotteries than any other type. The chance of winning the major prize in lotteries is very low.

Keno is a game of chance offered in Tasmanian gambling venues, such as some pubs and clubs. If you’ve been in a pub or club you might have seen Keno games on screens in the dining area, and the little Keno cards next to the pepper and salt on the tables.
